The youth project was planned with intention of keeping some recognized vulnerable children occupied during summer.
With the assistance of the social services 8 children were identified to be assisted.
Several business places were approached, however those who were suitable and able to absorb children were the Victors Supermarket, BBC Radio & TV, Jacquie Ryan Enterprises, Romeos Wayside, Glendon Hospital and MS Osbornes.
After school these children were approached, couple refused to be a part of the project as possibly they had other plans and one child was going off-island.
The business places filled in their review on the child with respect to attendance etc, by the end of each week and these children who have a Credit Union savings account had their money of $ 60/ wk deposited for their benefit which they would be able to use with parents consent as per the bank’s policy.
There were some expected glitches in terms of these children getting along and expectations. However with some changes in their management, approach and support they did well and completed 6 weeks of work.
Couple children did extremely well and did continue right up to the end of summer beyond what was agreed upon, with their demand from the managers. This implied that given an opportunity a difficult or vulnerable child can do better.
The project was well appreciated and recognized by parents, guardians, business centers and the society. These children also received some required counseling during their vacation time and definitely has a made a difference among these few individuals.
